I keep thinking, Victoria knows. She set Tim up. She planted the pills for him to find on the boat. (Why isn’t she more upset she lost her stash?) So many theories, so much fun. I’m loving this season. My favorite yet!
I have repeatedly thought it is very strange that Victoria isn't more upset that her pills are gone but I hadn't gone as far with this as you have! I do also think that there have been a few moments when Victoria has said very odd, very pointed things (like when she tells Tim he's doing a great job at life or however she phrases it). Anyway--I like this theory because it basically hides in plain sight what might be happening.
I can’t shake the resonance between Victoria and Edna Pontellier in the Awakening, specifically that scene where she’s staring out at the sea and the hotel employee wraps her in a duvet. Is she content with how her life has turned out? Is this what she wanted for herself as a younger woman? How much of her obsession with status and decency a genuine value she holds, and how much of it is armor against the realization that her life looks different from what she dreamed of?
Yes! I also thought of The Awakening in that scene. And, of course, Victoria's relationship with sleep is extremely parallel.
I do sort of want to take Mike White to task for not giving some of his wealthy female characters enough interiority to really answer the (great) questions you raise here. Victoria (so far) this season and Daphne last season ultimately simply seemed to be hollow and selfish to a flattening extent. I would LOVE it if in the final episode we get to see how Victoria got to this point in her life.
