Oooo YES to all of these more interesting and complex questions! It's funny, I ended up changing my mind several more times after writing my Obsession review. I was moved by a friend's profound experience with the text (including a read of Nikki's behavior as mapped on directly to bodily responses after sexual violence), despite feeling like there's no way Barker could have been so thoughtful as to include it. I guess I do believe the text is a thing unto itself that we can make meaning of and/but/also the author and structure is never really dead or separate. Culture is such a rich text!!! Your index is really useful & I'm going to CC some feminist horror friends on this right now!
